The Power of Living Soil
At the heart of Flora and Flame's cultivation philosophy is the use of living soil. This method goes beyond traditional growing techniques, embracing the complex ecosystem that exists beneath our feet. Living soil is a dynamic, self-sustaining environment teeming with beneficial microorganisms, fungi, and insects working in harmony to create the perfect growing conditions for cannabis.
By harnessing the power of nature, Flora and Flame creates an environment where cannabis can truly thrive. The result? Flowers with richer flavors, more complex aromas, and potentially enhanced effects.

The Benefits of Living Soil Cannabis
Flora and Flame's dedication to living soil cultivation may offer several potential benefits:
- Enhanced Flavor and Aroma: The rich, diverse ecosystem in living soil can contribute to more complex terpene profiles, resulting in more flavorful and aromatic cannabis.
- Improved Plant Health: Living soil provides a natural defense against pests and diseases, potentially leading to healthier plants.
- Sustainability: By mimicking nature's processes, living soil cultivation reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
- Potential Increased Potency: Some growers report that cannabis grown in living soil may have higher cannabinoid content.
Check out this interview with Chris Castle from Flora and Flame. Let’s start with your history with the plant… When, where, and how did you start growing cannabis? Chris: “I started cultivating cannabis 18 years ago when I was 19 in 2006, building out a room in a garage, purchasing some used equipment, and reading a Jorge Cervantes book.”
You have a unique cultivation process known as “Indoor Living Soil”, could you explain what this means? Chris: “Instead of filling pots with new soil (or other materials) and feeding the plants with synthetic nutrients, we use soil beds filled with microbial life, bugs, worms, etc. that continue to improve over time just like in nature! The idea behind living soil is we are creating an ecosystem of living organisms, micro and macro, to break down organic matter and nutrients to make them available for the plants to uptake. This allows us to be as sustainable as possible indoors as we use the same soil harvest after harvest, with the quality of the soil and flower only improving every round. This also leads to a cleaner, more flavorful, and medicinal product.”
That’s really cool, what makes living soil different as far as the finished product? Chris: “The main difference in the product is the effect. We have noticed more of a full spectrum, or full body high opposed to a dragging high that kind of sits behind the eyes in the head. Along with a better effect, the experience seems to last longer, and is just plain stronger. If you smoke a full joint normally, you are probably only smoking half of that joint if you are smoking flower grown in living soil!”
