How Much is a Gram of Weed?
Weed by the Gram
According to a national survey by the CDC, nearly 2.4 million Americans try cannabis for the first time each year. That’s nearly 7,000 late night missions to Cheba Hut every day. With so many Americans being introduced to the world of pot procurement for the first time, today’s cannabis connoisseurs may not know where to start when it comes to making their first flower purchase.
What does a Gram of Weed Look Like
The flower of the cannabis plant, or “bud”, is measured by weight in grams or fractions of an ounce:
⅛ of an ounce ~ 3.5 grams
¼ of an ounce ~ 7 grams
½ of an ounce ~ 14 grams
1 full ounce ~ 28 grams
Most often, the smallest quantity of flower available for purchase will come in the form of a single gram. At March and Ash, we recommend buying in this quantity when a customer wants to try out several different strains before committing to a larger purchase. A gram of flower should be comprised of one very large, or two small to medium sized, densely packed buds; about the size of two small Hot Wheels cars. A gram will typically last one person about three or four light smoke sessions. An eighth, which is about 3.5 grams, should be a little under a handful of bud - enough to keep the average toker happy for a week or two. A quarter ounce - twice as large as an eighth for those keeping score at home - should look like a healthy handful of sticky weed. A half ounce, which is about 14 grams, should fill a small mug. At this quantity, the average cannabis customer should be set for the next month or so.
The largest quantity of cannabis available for purchase is an ounce. You’ll probably need to grow another hand in order to hold a full ounce, but if you have someone there to help you carry it home, you’ll probably want to share some since an ounce should keep the average recreational smoker satisfied for several months.
