A Quick Guide to CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 identified cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and has been quickly gaining popularity for its purported wellness benefits.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 identified cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Recently, CBD has gained popularity as a means to treat a variety of ailments. Some promising research has shown it to effectively treat pain, inflammation, anxiety and more without psychoactive effects. CBD is a naturally occurring substance and, in fact, cannabinoids are found in other plants such as echinacea, black pepper or cacao. CBD products are made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting the extract with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.

How does CBD work?

Our bodies have two receptors for cannabinoids, called the CB1 and CB2 receptors. All cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, can produce effects in the body by attaching to these receptors. The receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of naturally occurring cannabinoids and receptors that regulate bodily function. Different conditions respond to different cannabinoids. For example, someone with chronic inflammation may benefit from CBD, whereas someone suffering from daily pain may benefit more from using THC.

Entourage Effect

The entourage effect is the concept that molecules that occur together in nature produce better effects when taken together, rather than taken alone. This is where cannabinoids and terpenes found in cannabis come into play. Even though CBD and THC can work alone for some conditions, certain patient-based studies have revealed that they often create better results ingested together.

Benefits of CBD

CBD could be useful in treating a variety of ailments including:

  • Pain
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s
  • Substance Abuse Withdrawal
  • Inflammation
  • Acne
  • Psoriasis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Heart Disease
  • ADHD

How to Choose a Product

  • Decide why you want to use CBD and in what form.
  • Choose a product that has been tested for ingredient accuracy. Avoid unnatural substances.
  • Consider how much THC the product contains; then consider dosage all around.
  • Broad or Full Spectrum vs. Isolate: Full spectrum CBD products can be overall more efficient than CBD isolate because they contain a combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, amino acids, glycerides and flavonoids. Isolate CBD is just as it sounds, a product containing just CBD and no other cannabinoids or terpenes. Choose between full spectrum or isolate based on your desired results.
  • Avoid products that make sweeping health claims.
