Time to wax those skis and snowboards and run to the hills. This winter’s snowfall hasn’t been measured in inches of snow, as it has been storming by the feet. People of all skill levels are heading to the mountain. Ski trails are well covered and freshly groomed with packed powder. The terrain parks are all firing full cylinder with all the jump and jib lines on our local hills including Bear Mountain, Snow Summit and Mountain High. For the powder hounds, there is already over 14 feet of snow at the Lake Tahoe and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges and it’s only February. There is no doubt California is having one of the best starts to the ski season on record.
After a long day of riding, more people are turning to cannabis after exploring the mountain. Cannabis has always existed in ski town subculture. Now that cannabis is recreational, it has become a common choice for those who don’t drink, but want to partake in the Aprés Ski festivities.
Skiing and snowboarding are intense action sports that utilize all different kinds of muscle groups. People have also been turning to different infused cannabis products to help alleviate muscle soreness caused by the physical demands of hitting the hill, making it easier to recover and get back out to the ski resort the next day.
Cannabis Packing List
It’s always important to plan and pack your essentials before heading up the hill. While there are dispensaries up in these mountain towns, they tend to be more expensive due to the tourism taxes. Furthermore, because they are in remote locations, they might not even carry your favorite brands of cultivars, dabs, edibles, pre-rolls, topicals and vape cartridges.
Once you get your gear and all your equipment rentals situated, it’s time to start the more important packing list by planning out your party favors. Let’s take a look at some cannabis products that you should consider bringing with you on your next road trip to the slopes.
Cruising with the Right Cultivar
Smoking flower with the right terpene profiles is key to a well rounded trip. You want to make sure you have the right cultivar during Après Ski and another strain or two for the wind down at the cabin.
Tangie Ting - Blem
Tangie Ting from Blem offers a right mix of pinene, limonene and myrcene. This cross of California Orange and Skunk #1, has a potent citrus flavor, with gassy and tangerine overtones. Tangie Ting is purported to provide a boost in creative thoughts, an increase in focus, and an uplifted disposition. This is a great strain for those that want to be social when you get off the slopes and hit the town.
Tremendous - Laughing Gas
Uncle Joey Diaz’s Tremendous from Laughing Gas is a perfect cultivar to decompress from a long day of sessioning the hill. A cross of Gelato 33 with Cactuz (Sunset Sherbert x Gelato 41 Back Crossed with Presidential OG), this perfectly balanced cultivar provides an excellent blend of gassy, piney and sweet smoke. It is purported to offer a calming, relaxing and sleepy vibe to its smoke. Tremendous’ dominant terpenes are myrcene, limonene and linalool. Tremendous is a perfect cultivar for staying in the condo with your crew after riding.
Pre-Rolls For Portability
Pre-rolled joints are easy to pack and transport, and are a convenient option for burning one down as you breathe in that crisp mountain air. Grab a few of these babies and you’ll be ready for the next safety meeting with the crew.
XJ-13 - THC Design
For a pre-roll pack to keep you active, THC Design’s XJ-13 is a perfect cultivar. This Jack Herer and G13 Haze fusion offers a smoke with a sweet citrus flavor, with pine and gassy undertones.
Farmer and the Felon Infused Pre-Rolls
If you have a higher tolerance and need a pre-roll with more of a lift, Farmer and the Felon Infused Pre-Rolls are made with sungrown whole fresh flowers and infused with hash extract.
AIOs on the Downlow
Cannabis vapes are a great option for those who want to consume cannabis discreetly. Vape cartridges come in a variety of strains and can be easily swapped out for desired effects. After you drop the little shredders off at ski school, or have to hang at the bar with your more conservative family or friends, vapes are an excellent solution to keep your cannabis use on the down low.
Kalya and Community Cannabis recently released their new solventless rosin sauce digital vape pens. Kalya just dropped a Sticky Papaya Rosin Sauce AIO that is a collaboration with Dancing Dog Ranch, a woman owned farm located on the south facing hills of Southern Mendocino known for their organic growing and unique cuts. Community Cannabis is also powered by Kalya, and offers top shelf rosin sauce AIOs at an affordable price.
Medicated Mountain Munchies
Edibles are a great option for those who prefer not to smoke or vape. They provide a longer-lasting, more consistent high than smoking, and can be easily packed and discreetly transported.
While physical roads take you high up in the mountains, Camino takes you to a state of mind. Camino Gummies use custom combinations of THC, CBD, CBN, and natural terpenes to create a highly-tailored edible experience that’s uniquely transporting.
Balms for Your Bruises
If you are hitting the hill for the first time this season, your body will ache in muscles you didn’t know you had. Topicals are cannabis-infused creams and lotions that can be applied to the skin for localized muscle soreness. They are a good option for those who experience discomfort, or sore muscles and joints after a day of riding.
Papa & Barkley offers a cannabinoid-rich plant-based balm that comes in 1:3 and 3:1 THC to CBD ratios. Made from the whole plant with all-natural ingredients, Papa & Barkley targeted topical formulas will not irritate sensitive skin and is purported to help alleviate post workout soreness.
Regulated Recovery with Tinctures
While recovering from a day on the hill at the cabin, try some tinctures to help mitigate your post workout soreness. Tinctures are liquid cannabis extracts that can be ingested. They can provide a more measured, controlled dose than smoking or edibles and can be packed easily. Care By Design tinctures are made from California sun grown cannabis, triple-tested for purity, cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan and are paired with MCT (coconut) oil to improve absorption. Powerful, potent and all from the cannabis plant.
Safety First in the Mountains
Depending on which hill you decide to trek up to, it is important to note that cannabis laws vary by state and county, and it is important to be aware of the laws in the area where you will be traveling. Smoking weed in the mountains can be an enjoyable and unique experience, but it's important to keep safety and legality in mind. Always follow the local laws and regulations regarding cannabis use.
It is essential to be extra careful when at high elevation and make sure to take all necessary safety precautions. It's important to note that consuming cannabis can impair your judgment, reaction time and balance. If you are not acclimated to higher elevations, tolerance levels can be easily affected.
